Sleep deprivation is one of the toughest aspects
of life as a new parent. While the adrenaline rush at the hospital was
enough to keep you going, lack of sleep hits you hard once you've been
home for a few weeks. After being deluged with hundreds of “perfect”
sleep solutions from friends and family members, it can be hard to
determine what you should do to help guide your newborn back to sleep.
The most important thing to remember is that not every solution works
for every baby. Like adults, newborns are equipped with their own
personalities, tendencies and preferences. It can be initially daunting
trying to gauge what works best for your child; should you listen to
your mother who swears by the “let ‘em cry it out” method? Or should you
listen to your best friend's sister, who says to never let babies cry
themselves to sleep…? The best approach is to see what works best for
you AND your baby, and use it.
